WGIC Member GHGSat has been awarded EO Product of the Year by the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) for their first-of-a-kind, precision Industrial Methane Monitoring.
The award was ‘virtually’ handed over by Emmanuel Pajot, Secretary General of EARSC as part of the EXPANDEO 2021 conference. The award recognises a commercial product which actively supports sustainable development projects or the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a national, regional or local level. GHGSat’s industrial methane monitoring product collects Earth Observation (EO) data at sufficient spatial resolution to attribute emissions to industrial facilities: down to approximately 25m x 25m metres on the ground. The product was developed to provide industrial operators from oil and gas, mining, hydropower generation and waste management with a low-cost, high-precision way of understanding , and ultimately reducing, their greenhouse gas emissions.
Analytics applied to emission data
The product includes proprietary analytics applied to emissions data, collected by GHGSat’s patented satellite and aircraft sensors, and is delivered as a service. Through its Emission Analytics service, GHGSat generates valuable operational, environmental, health and safety and regulatory insights, as well as market and government intelligence for customers including rapid detection, quantification of leaks and prediction of future emission risk. The company has three high-resolution satellites currently in orbit, with eight more planned by the end 2022.
GHGSat has revealed emissions at thousands of facilities world-wide. GHGSat recently opened its first European office, in London, and its data has been made available for research purposes via ESA’s Third Party Mission catalogue. GHGSat’s methane emissions monitoring incorporates proprietary data from their own satellites and other third-party data, including industrial operator data.
