From Digital Twins to the Metaverse

September 26 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm MT

The “Metaverse,” a term coined over 30 years ago, has gained significant attention recently, ranking second in the Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year. However, this recognition may not signify broad understanding and adoption.

Building on WGIC’s 2022 report, “Spatial Digital Twins: Global Status, Opportunities, and the Way Forward,” it became clear that there remains confusion both inside and outside the geospatial sector with the terminology associated with this topic, e.g., spatial digital twins, the mirrored world, the Metaverse, to name a few.

To address challenges in natural resource management faced by governments, ConnectMii and WGIC developed a 1.5 hr virtual seminar on the Metaverse, acknowledging the value of geospatial data and technologies.

Despite the pervasiveness of geospatial, GIS, Earth observation, and mapping technologies today, they are rarely fully integrated across domains. Spatial digital twins are evolving in various sectors, emphasizing the need for integrated work and a ‘build once, use many times’ approach. Understanding the interconnectedness of the built and natural environments is crucial, as changes in one impact the other.
