Numerous efforts aimed at fostering an inclusive workplace — or what has come to be known as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) — have grown in recent years. Previously, DEI was viewed as a means of ensuring government compliance or as a “program” to be managed by businesses. The geospatial sector is also recognizing the need for DEI today, as a diverse population of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures provides the required balance of voices and diversity of opinion. This was highlighted during the DEI Workshop: a ground-breaking effort of the WGIC at the 2021 Geospatial World Forum. The initiative’s focus last year was on increasing awareness of the importance of DEI with an emphasis on the advantages of diversity, the biases that impede inclusion, and steps for becoming more inclusive.
Continuing from last time, the time has come to transition from awareness to action!
Individuals require new modes of thought and communication around diversity. Leaders must acquire new skills in order to foster workplace equity and inclusion. Additionally, organizations want scalable mechanisms to guarantee that their diversity and inclusion efforts avoid typical pitfalls and are both strong and sustainable. This year’s WGIC-DEI session will seek to assist the geospatial community by delving deeply into the dynamics of DEI in the workplace, within their individual organization and culture — and by identifying concrete measures they can take to accelerate desired success on their DEI efforts. The session’s goal is to highlight some effective ways to take real action on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
