Climate Change and Innovative Geospatial & Space-based Solutions Roundtable

May 11 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm CEST

Climate change is directly affecting our lives, as changing weather patterns, more frequent and extreme natural events disrupt the order of ecosystems and economies. The contribution of human activity to the augmented greenhouse effect, the pollution of ecosystems, the resulting loss of biodiversity, and the rapid depletion of natural resources are all reasons for concern. To combat and halt the adverse effects of climate change, prompt and coordinated action at the international level is ongoing. Discussions at the regional level such as the European Union (EU), Arctic Nations, and others are important for aligning their climate strategies with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Paris Agreement on Climate.

In this context, the overarching set of strategic policies, key objectives and transformative actions of the Green Deal are supporting the development of a new green economic model which will transform Europe in the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Driven by growing concern and awareness of the climate crisis, governments, businesses, financial institutions and individuals have taken major actions to ensure a transition towards a more sustainable economy. Several policies are stimulating companies to get greener, impacting the development of new space-based solutions and innovative products in different market segments including Agriculture, Energy and Raw Materials, Infrastructures, Climate services and Urban development. Geospatial and Space application companies are leveraging the unprecedented availability of data together with the traction provided by Green Transformation market and the numerous funding opportunities to create new solutions addressing the green transformation.

This round table, co-hosted by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) and the World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC), will present the work of both the organizations on Climate change. The event will bring together policy makers and industry leaders to discuss innovative geospatial and space-based solutions in the European Green Deal and protecting critical infrastructure in the Arctic, among others.
