Bentley's Year In Infrastructure 2021

The finalists of Bentley Systems’ Year In Infrastructure are here! The projects in the category Utilities & Communications are meant to showcase their work to meet the demands for renewable energy.

Categories

The categories encompass different infrastructure projects and stages – from design, to construction, to operations. The nominations in each category are judged by an independent panel of jurors, using criteria specific to each category. Categories are: Mobility, Project Delivery, Cities, Water and Energy. Finalists demonstrate excellence and digital advancements in different award categories. Within Mobility, they include: Bridges, Rail and Transit, Road and Rail Asset Performance, Roads and Highways, and Structural Engineering. Finalists in Project Delivery are divided in Digital Construction, Geotechnical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Project Delivery Information Management. Cities awards recognize innovations in Buildings and Campuses, Digital Cities, Land and Site Development, and Reality Modeling. Water has two award categories: Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, and Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Networks. Finalists in the Energy category demonstrate excellence and digital advancements in four award categories: Mining and Offshore Engineering, Power Generation, Utilities and Communications, and Utilities and Industrial Asset Performance.

All finalists revealed

CEO Greg Bentley, Bentley executives, Siemens, and AEC Advisors will share their latest insights during the Year in Infrastructure (YII). The YII will take place on December 1 and 2, 2021. Throughout the event, Bentley Systems will celebrate the digital advancements in infrastructure and sustainability by spotlighting the winners of the 2021 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure. Over the last three weeks, Bentley Systems has been sneak previewing finalists in all categories above. On November 24, 2021, they presented the last finalists to be revealed. They are in Energy/ Utilities and Communications.

London Power Tunnels 2

London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2) will help replace and improve the London power network by constructing 3-meter-diameter tunnels stretching 32.5 kilometers at depths of 10 meters to 63 meters. Previously, they used traditional transactional methods. They hired Mott MacDonald to integrate a digital approach with existing processes and infrastructure. However, Mott MacDonald required a connected data environment. They selected Bentley ProjectWise as the collaborative platform and single source of truth for all engineering data. Using Bentley’s software enabled them to work within the same production environment and exchange information within minutes. Mott MacDonald used the solution to eliminate up to four hours of work transferring data packages, streamline workflows, and provide instant visibility into work progress, as well as data consistency. SYNCHRO Pro’s 4D modeling helped assess construction and identify potential safety issues. The digital strategy lays the foundation to leverage digital DNA for asset operations and maintenance.

Located along the border of Thailand and Cambodia, the 230-kilovolt Koh Kong substation will provide essential power to 11 rural villages, strengthening the reliability of Cambodia’s grid. PESTECH was awarded the construction and installation contract and faced site constraints along with a tight timeline and budget. Manual substation design methods were time-consuming and error-prone, so they needed integrated intelligent modeling technology in a connected data environment. They selected Bentley’s OpenUtilities and OpenBuildings to model the entire substation, including equipment and buildings, addressing its entire lifecycle. ProjectWise provided the collaborative design platform. They could automatically extract materials and construction deliverables, eliminating manual errors and increasing design quality. Maximizing design automation through digital modeling accelerated design time by 50%, while coordinated design and clash detection reduced design changes by 60%. Bentley’s integrated smart technology solution allows utilities to keep pace with refurbishment requirements and reduce regulatory compliance risks.

Suixian and Guangshui 80MWp Ground-based Photovoltaic Power Project of Hubei Energy Group

POWERCHINA HUBEI ELECTRIC ENGINEERING CO., LTD. Suixian and Guangshui 80MWp Ground-based Photovoltaic Power Project of Hubei Energy Group. Location: Guangshui, Hubei, China. Image Credit: PowerChina Hubei Electric Engineering Co., Ltd.

PowerChina Hubei Electric Engineering is the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor to deliver an 80-megawatt ground-based photovoltaic power station. They faced several challenges, including a short 10-month schedule with a requirement to realize lifecycle digital twin application. They originally used third-party design software but quickly realized that it was inefficient and that they needed integrated dynamic modeling technology. PowerChina Hubei selected Bentley’s OpenBuildings Designer and OpenRoads for 3D modeling, as well as ProjectWise for collaborative design management. With Bentley, they developed photovoltaic design software for mountainous photovoltaic power projects. The solution optimized the design scheme, reducing land occupation and avoiding 40 potential rework scenarios to save more than CNY 800,000. Integrating SYNCHRO 4D accelerated construction by approximately 30 days. They used the Bentley iTwin platform to automatically generate digital twin models, avoiding approximately CNY 1 million in costs had the digital twins been developed at the operation stage.
