Accelerating geospatial digital transformation more important than ever

To emerge as winners, enterprises need to focus on smart automation, end-to-end asset visibility, employing a connected workforce, and building intelligent and resilient supply chains.

To emerge as winners, enterprises need to focus on smart automation, end-to-end asset visibility, employing a connected workforce, and building intelligent and resilient supply chains. Intelligence is more than automation, digitization, and optimization. Intelligence is the ability to create future-ready solutions that solves business problems in continuous real-time.

Enterprises fueled by Industry 4.0 are poised to create an economic value of $3.7 trillion by 2025. Digital transformation in asset-heavy industries is driven by the convergence of IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operational Technology) landscapes. While enterprises are deploying various digital technologies across multiple application areas, very few are realizing meaningful value.

INTELLICYIENT: A Suite of Digital Transformation Solutions
With a deep understanding of business operations requirements across industries, Cyient has launched INTELLICYIENT, a suite of six digital solutions aimed at creating transformational value out of IT/OT convergence., INTELLICYIENT aims to accelerate digital industrial transformation with Industry 4.0 technologies for industries that draw significant value from their assets such as manufacturing, industrial, aerospace, utilities, telecommunications, mining, and natural resources.

Creating Value in the Geospatial Space
Cyient’s digital solutions are supported and enabled by an investment in nine technology studios, including the GIS System Integration studio as a critical element. There is a burgeoning opportunity for geospatial data, services, and insights integration across the various transformative digital applications of relevance to organizations. By embedding the integration of geospatial insights into the INTELLICYIENT offering, Cyient is making a commitment to spread wider application and adoption of location-based intelligence than has traditionally been offered through stand-alone services and solutions.

Optimized Asset Management
Traditionally, asset inspection and management involved extensive manual field survey, which entails health and safety risks, sub-optimal productivity, and high costs. Remote sensing can be applied to quickly capture required data over a wide area in a short span of time. New data sets are being captured by satellites—imagery, video, thermal, hyperspectral—producing more data, more frequently over much larger areas than ever before. This means more insights and more regular cadence for asset inspection or condition monitoring.

Remote sensing can help a variety of industries including utilities, oil and gas, telecommunications, and infrastructure companies that perform frequent asset inspections to analyze asset conditions, surroundings, and risks associated with assets. Identifying risks to underground gas pipelines using satellite data or remote sensing data using AI/ML and human processes to validate the risk saves time, effort, and money. For example, using geospatial data, inspections can be carried out frequently, and risks associated with digging, construction, road work, and other infrastructure can be mitigated.

Digital Mobile Workforce Management
Be it a survey, inspection, or customer-facing team, empowering on-field crew members with the data they need to make informed decisions on the ground delivers increased productivity and a superior employee experience. By integrating geospatial insights with a mobile workforce platform, INTELLICYIENT helps capture insights from the field for immediate use. In some cases, the insights can help make near-real-time decisions. An example would be to use mobile mapping or LiDAR data to create designs to help move the fiber network planning and design decisions to the office. The workforce can be deployed with confidence as they have all the information about location surroundings thus ensuring their safety as well.

Smart Factory or Connected Worker
A smart factory or connected worker solution is not complete without the location context integrated into it. This includes moving assets like a connected car or a non-moving IoT sensor where location is an important attribute. Managing a smart factory effectively requires a digital twin and a geospatial/virtual backbone that enables effective management of the site/factory and allows the concept of a connected worker. For example, a vehicle moving in an underground mine with a sensor on it can relate to sensors on the mine walls and floor and provide insights about change, risk, and movement.

Geofencing ensures safety of the workers by providing alerts if a worker is close to a prohibited zone or a high-risk area. For example, using satellite imagery combined with weather reports and analytics can help warn a utility worker if their truck/work site is in danger of infringing on an environmentally sensitive area (wetlands conservation areas, for instance) or help locate potential wild fire hazards.

Process Intelligence through Geospatial Insights
Data from satellite and terrestrial sensors are more frequent, and at ever higher resolutions so more data is available to derive insights. Automation through the application of AI/ML development plays a truly transformational role in deriving rapid insights from imagery and unlocking value captured in the pixels. Enterprises need highly automated and accurate data pipelines to ensure the data is visible or available much quicker than it used to be. Digital technologies like cloud, Edge processing, and ML play a huge role in shortening the cycle from data capture to visibility and insights.

Cyient started as a geospatial company and they expanded our offerings across multiple industries. Today, the company leverages geospatial expertise to provide digital solutions that deliver significant impact. Geospatial is a transformative, digital technology that plays at two levels.

  • Enterprises wanting to leverage the insights of geospatial data that currently need more.
  • Enterprises using geospatial technology that need to look at improving the level of process automation. The volume and veracity of data coming in is far greater, more regular, and much more accurate than it ever was. So digital processes need to evolve to accommodate the same. For example, map updates used to be provided once in a couple of months. Today, we have self-healing maps and can access maps from the service providers’ servers and be updated in near-real-time.

Cyient believes that having an enterprise-wide GIS with the necessary connectivity is integral to have good communication between the platforms/processes and managing the enterprise effectively. This can change the way enterprises do business. It can help to do more, better, and quicker as we can now have access to more data, accurate data, and frequent data coming in.

The most successful Industry 4.0 solutions are the ones that bring domain knowledge, depth of technological expertise, engineering excellence, and in-depth understanding of business operations. These have been the unique strengths of Cyient, making us the partner of choice across our Fortune 500 customers globally. This is where INTELLICYIENT brings in non-linear value to enterprises.

Toward a Resilient Future
“INTELLICYIENT will help enterprises in asset-intensive industries achieve the full potential of digital transformation with IT/OT convergence.  We are excited to see our experience in integrating asset data (time series) and spatial data (location) with the latest digital technologies to help our customers in their digital transformation journey,” says Karthik Natarajan, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Cyient.

Adds Jubal Harpster, Vice President and Sector Head–Geospatial, Cyient, “Geospatial technology is integral to delivering the promise of digital transformation.
